I'm trying to go down column a, look for a certain word, let's say 'excel', then return the value in the cell four cells to the right.

My best guest was

=offset(search("excel",a:a),0,4)

But the search function and the find function really aren't built for that.

Tiny charts, called Sparklines, were added to Excel 2010. Look for Sparklines on the Insert tab.

let's say you have the following, starting from range A1 with apple, and you need to get the value 8 in range G1, then you type in G1 =INDEX(E:E,MATCH("excel",A:A,0))

apple13s68
orange13s7
excel5678
apple13s9
excel13s10

but be careful, this formula will bring the value which corresponds only to the first appearance of "excel" in column A.
