I have a large spreadsheet in which every cell in it has a formula that is similar to = .4*A1 + P6/F7

I would like to replace .4 with .35 globally in every cell. When I try to use replace, i only get error messages. Is there some way to use the replace menu item to get this done?

How can you automate Excel?
Press Alt+F11 from Windows Excel to open the Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) editor.
the tilde "~" is used in front of the wild card characters (* & ?) so that Excel recoginizes that you want the literal use not the wild card use

try this
find = .4~*
replace = .35*

I tested and it worked

A SOX-compliant suggestion...

Insert a new sheet, name it Admin.

In A2 enter: Multiplier
In B2 enter: 0.35
Select B2 and assign it Multiplier as name via the Name Box.

Run the procedure Alynn suggests:

find = .4~*
replace = Multiplier*

or

find = .35~*
replace = Multiplier*
