When I have a number of workbooks open - each time I hit Save it appears to save all open workbooks (which can be painfully slow when large files are open in the background)- is there a way to only save the active workbook?

Why can't spreadsheets drive cars? They crash too often!
It definitely shouldn't do that - have you checked whether the workbook are actually being saved (eg look at the modified date of the file(s) in Windows Explorer)?

Richard - thanks - checked timing and it's not saving background reports - could it simply be processing issue because too many large files open in background? Background files are 1.5Gb.

Wow! That's a lot of files! Could be I guess - workbooks tend to recalculate before save (unless specifically switched off in Tools>Options) so this could be taking time if you have lots of formulas (especially if they link to each other).
