Saving shared workbook - new files being created with odd na

Multiple users update information in a shared workbook. Sporadically, upon saving, Excel creates a new file with a name like "eb5fc200", which the user is unaware of. When they go back to add information, their latest data is not in the shared workbook, because it's in the odd new file. Sometimes I can open the new file with Excel, and sometimes I am asked to choose a program to open it with. The users all say they are not noticing anything different. Most of the time their updates are saved under the correct filename. Does anyone know what causes the new files to be created, and how to stop this from happening?

Excel Facts

What did Pito Salas invent?
Pito Salas, working for Lotus, popularized what would become to be pivot tables. It was released as Lotus Improv in 1989.
New files are usually temp files that are created because they HAVE to be. When Excel is editing files on a share, it creates a temp file on the share for the user to work with. That is more than likely where this "weird" filename is coming from.

Questions?

Thank you for the reply. I don't know if they are temp files. They don't have a tmp or temp extension or a "~", and the data in them doesn't get incorporated into the regular file.
But whether they are temp or not, do you know how to prevent them from happening, or at least to warn users so they can save under the correct file name?

This is a common problem when the network is Windows 2000, the problem is compounded when the server is also running Netware- Novel at the same time. The problem stems from the extream latency time of the network, which could be made even more of a problem when the application is on the network rather than the local PC.

The user must allow extra time for any Excel action and not save until Excel is done doing what-ever. If you have a network collision due to the lattency issue you will get this message. Micro Soft does not have a fix for this, but thinks if the network is a Windows 2000 only the problem will be minimized. You will not have this problem if each local PC has its own copy of Office-Excel installed on its Local Drive.

When this happens the backup file is stored on the local PC's default folder for the working copy of Excel, but it is hidden. To find the backup copy of the file, have the user write down the backup file name it will be something like: EO00234X4. On the Open file utility of Excel switch the file view to all files, then look for the backup file, open it and re-name it all the users work should be there. JSW

DOES THIS APPLY TO WINDOWS 7 as well? I am getting the same or simialr problems. Not quite sure how else users would be simultaneously sharing a file if not on some sort of shared network.
