saving twice

Hi all,

I have Excel 97 running on Windows 98. When I save a large spreadsheet, it saves twice. The first time the progress bar in the lower left-hand corner says "saving (filename)" and then it says "Microsoft Excel 5.0/7.0 saving (filename)". How do I get rid of this 2nd save? This is a very large spreadsheet, and sometimes it takes 2 to 3 minutes to complete this 2nd save.

I looked under the Tools --> Options menu, and under the Transition tab, there is a selection for how you want spreadsheets saved. No matter what setting I choose, though, it always saves twice.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Copy PDF to Excel
Select data in PDF. Paste to Microsoft Word. Copy from Word and paste to Excel.
Have you looked in the workbook module to see if any code exists that instructs the workbook to save twice? If you right click on the little Excel icon just to the left of the "File" menu option (near the top left corner of the monitor screen), and left click on View Code, you will see such code if it exists. If you do see it, I would recommend contacting the author to ask why s/he coded the file that way...there might be a good reason why and you should find out before deleting the code.

Hi Tom,

I created this spreadsheet from scratch, so it should be set to the default options I would think. To my knowledge, none of the other spreadsheets I have worked on have exhibited this behavior. If they have, they saved so fast that I didn't notice it. It's only because this spreadsheet is so large (over 25MB) that I can see clearly what it's doing. Any other suggestions?

Thank You,
Richard

Are you sure that the file is actually being saved twice? Or is it just that the text in the message bar is changing while it is saving?

I tried saving one of my larger files and saw the same messages as you. I did note that the progress bar did not move during the first message which to me inidicates that a save was not taking. The progress bar did move during the second message.

I suspect this is another one of those little "quirks" that are in Excel that are meant to push us round the bend eventually.

It saves it twice because you are saving as Microsoft Excel 5.0/7.0. You need to change the save as.

Change the save as to say just Excel 5.0 and it will only save once.

Thank you Lisa, you were right. I chose Save As, and selected the Excel 5.0/95 option, and it works like a charm. Weird thing is, I created this spreadsheet from scratch the same way I create all of my other spreadsheets, and they all get this option as a default. Wonder why this one didn't?

Thanks again,
Richard
