Is there an excel function to scan a cell for a particular value?

e.g. Cell contains string "abcd", function will display "1" if "d" is in that string.

I know vlookup works, but you can only search on the 1st column and would like the flexibility to search other columns.

TIA.

You can teach Excel a new custom list. Type the list in cells, File, Options, Advanced, Edit Custom Lists, Import, OK
No, you will need to use the "Find" function or test individual characters with the "Mid, Right and/or Left" functions!

You could search whatever cell you want with something like this:
=IF(ISERROR(FIND("d",E25)),"text for error",1)

Just change your search range, seach text, and error text to suit your needs. Hope that helps!
