Scatter plot axis display problem

I am trying to set up "empty" scatter plots that display counts on various dates when cells are populated with data.

When I select the date x-axis data it appears to the side of the Edit Series dialog box and the Select Data Source dialog box as dates, but the graph displays generic categorical values, 1, 2, 3 etc depending on how many values I have in my series.

I've search a number of forums and google for a similar situation but I'm having no luck.

Excel Facts

Select a hidden cell
Somehide hide payroll data in column G? Press F5. Type G1. Enter. Look in formula bar while you arrow down through G.
Additional Info: I notice the problem appears to have something to do with the first cell in the x-axis values being a reference to a formula. The formula evaluates the first record with data and subtracts 7 ie: =B6-7, where B6 is the first date with count data.
