i seen a great bit of info on INDEX and MATCH and INDIRECT somewhere around here but cant remember which setups return cell values and which setups return cell locations

i've tried searching throught the topics but cant narrow it down enough to find the one i want in 91 pages of search results mentioning INDEX

can anybody tell me the different ways u can use INDEX MATCH and INDIRECT, or tell me where somebody else has mentioned it?

thanks.

Excel Facts

Can you AutoAverage in Excel?
There is a drop-down next to the AutoSum symbol. Open the drop-down to choose AVERAGE, COUNT, MAX, or MIN
MATCH returns the position/location of a lookup value in a horizontal (1 x n cells) or vertical range (m x 1 cells):

If 5 is in A5 in A3:A25,

=MATCH(5,A3:A25,0)

will return 3.

INDEX is an accessor function, that is, given a position (in terms of a row number and/or a column number) it will return the value at that position:

=INDEX(A3:A25,3)

will return the value from the third cell (that is, 1=A3, 2=A4, 3=A5) of A3:A25.

INDIRECT is a dereferencer...

=INDIRECT(A2)

where A2 houses the name List, will make the elements of List available.

See the Help file for further examples...
