Separate initial from surname

I want to seperate initials from 1st names. For example in cell a1 I have the following name:

A Smith

I want the A to appear in cell b1 and Smith to appear in C1 and would like a formula in B1 and C1 which will do this as the list of names in column A is quite long

B1 =LEFT(A1,1)

C1 =RIGHT(A1,LEN(A1)-2)
