Something changed in my spreadsheet and when I enter a formula (=INDEX(xxx, MATCH(yy,zz,0))), it is considered a constant. By that I mean, it thinks it is a regular text string. I tried several experiments to diagnose the problem. I added columns to the table with the same result. I added a new table in a new tab with the same result. Existing cells work fine. When I add a row to the table, the formulas from the other rows in the same column work fine. I must have inadvertantly set a parameter which is causing this but I can't find it. I also made sure the calculation mode is on "Automatic" but this shouldn't be the problem even it it was on.

Excel Facts

Create a chart in one keystroke
Select the data and press Alt+F1 to insert a default chart. You can change the default chart to any chart type
is the cell formatted as text?
if so changing it won't take effect until you re-enter into it.

The parenthesis in the post was for sentence structure. The formula is entered into the cell without them.

I am not quite sure what re-entering the cell means.

May be give this a shot:
Not sure for later versions, but in 2003 if you click on HELP there is an option called Detect and repair , try that, maybe some control files went bad. Few months back I could not get to help file and it caused the software to crash, after running the Detect and repair, it is back to normal. Just a suggestion :)

Changing format to General then entered the formula again. This fixed the problem. Thanks for the quick response. I am not sure how I got in the situation but I am good now.
