# Shorten a number

#### rifpool

##### Board Regular
How do I....

732 =7
745 = 7
702 = 7
855 = 8
945 = 9
1020 = 10

I want to drop the last 2 numbers.

### Excel Facts

Why does 9 mean SUM in SUBTOTAL?
It is because Sum is the 9th alphabetically in Average, Count, CountA, Max, Min, Product, StDev.S, StDev.P, Sum, VAR.S, VAR.P.

If you want a formula try this.

=LEFT(A1, LEN(A1)-2)

=INT(A1/100)

If you want a formula try this.

=LEFT(A1, LEN(A1)-2)

For a numeric value,

=LEFT(A1, LEN(A1)-2)+0 #### rifpool

Thanks people. All 3 solutions work just fine, thanks.

I'm not sure what exactly is the difference between my ending value coming from a formula or by being numeric?

left(), being a text function, returns a text data item. this is going to choke some of the maths functions (e.g. sum() ). +0 coerces back to a number.

in general, better to find a mathematical route to the transformation if you can...
