Shorthand mnemonic key entry

Has anyone worked out a method for entering information by code-key-stroke in Excel, like on a "Palm Pilot." On a Palm Pilot you hit the "Shorthand" key and type your code and the codes value replaces your keyed code, like:
(~JW) gives: Joe Was and (~JSW) gives: Joseph S. Was, as the displayed text?

P.S: There may be a built-in Excel utility for this that I don't know of? JSW

Excel Facts

Create a Pivot Table on a Map
If your data has zip codes, postal codes, or city names, select the data and use Insert, 3D Map. (Found to right of chart icons).
Jim,
In autocorrect how would you distigish between real information and code?

Like: NA and NA where NA = NA(Not Available) and NA(North America)?
Have you worked out a system that works for you? JSW

Jim,
You were right, I did not think Excel would let me use the "~" as a code indicator in autocorrect, but it does. It does not seem to cause any problems and works in most actions. Thank's, JSW.
