Slow to Subtotal

I've asked this before but it's still bugging me. Does anyone know why my Excel 97 takes an age to insert subtotals? There are only a few hundred lines and ten columns involved, but it can easily take a minute or more to put them in. Nothing else is open, and the rest of the macro rattles along, it's just slow to subtotal.

Repeat Last Command
Pressing F4 adds dollar signs when editing a formula. When not editing, F4 repeats last command.

Thanks. I've cracked it by fixing all the cells as values rather than formulas. Sub totals are now almost instant.
