smoothing data

Hi.

Some background. I work on a vessel laying subsea cable on the bottom of the ocean.
Usually we need to draw this cable position in XY, and also in Z.
For the position in Z, we generate a profile view along the XY position. Giving the orange line in the attached screenshot.
However, since this is too spiky, we need to create a smooth line through the tops of this orange profile. Being the white line on the screenshot.
This is quite tedious to do, and I was thinking of doing it in excel.
First I was thinking of doing this in blocks of every 1mm and determining the max value in this block of 1m. But this does not work because over small sand dunes, you will have a line going wide then it should be.
Any smart people who know if something like this is possible with Excel? Would be extremely useful.
I have a text file with some sample data. Where the KP is the length along the line. Z is the height value. Is there a way to post it here?

Excel Facts

Wildcard in VLOOKUP
Use =VLOOKUP("Apple*" to find apple, Apple, or applesauce
Ideally it is better not to have too many points. For example on more or less horizontal parts the number of points along the x-axis could be reduced. But where there is sand dunes more points are required
