Thanks for your help before.

With regard to the below formula, i now understand that the $ is absolute and the words in '...' are sheets in the same book. what does the "y" mean? does that mean "input a y in this cell, if the SUM us true"?

=SUMIF('Project Resource Plan'!$B$3:$B$137,"y",'Project Resource Plan'!AW3:AW138)

What exactly is the difference between SUM and SUMIF ?

Thanks very much

Shade all formula cells
To shade all formula cells: Home, Find & Select, Formulas to select all formulas. Then apply a light fill color.
If in the range b3:b137 a cell has the value "y", then sum the corresponding values found in aw3:aw138.

Sumif conditionally totals a range based on criteria, sum just totals all entries.

Good morning collinsc

If you could write formulae in plain English, your formula would say :

Add up the values in the range AW3:AW138 only if the value in the corresponding row of column B is equal to "y".

The function SUM adds a whole range (or a number of ranges), SUMIF will look at a whole range and only add the values if a certain condition is met.
