Sort dates in excel

How do you sort a series of serial numbers with 9 digits.
For example the fist 4 digits make up up the month and year.
The last five digits I do not care about.

Example

0111 = Jan / 2011
0201 = Feb / 2001

So how do I sort 100 serial number by the first 4 digits.

Is there a macro that can sort the serial numbers for me.

In another column, =--(mid(a1, 3, 2) & left(a1, 2))

Copy down and sort by that column.
