Sort on a hidden column?

Have a worksheet (named Roster) for some golf outings & due to the number scheme in Col F (Tee Assignment), I inserted a Col E and used an "IF" command to get it to sort F correctly. I also have another workbook (named Sort which is an exact copy of Roster but without Col E). 1. Is it possible to hide Col E in Roster and do an auto sort on Col F when the worksheet is opened or when a new person is added to Col C (last name)? 2. Is it possible, when I open the Sort workbook, to have it auto alphabetically sort on Col C of Roster?

To further complicate this, Roster can accommodate 295 names. In most cases the number of names will be less than max. I have tried sorting it but it displays the blank rows first in both Roster and Sort workbooks.

I don't quite know how to attach an actual copy of Roster for you to view, but it looks like this. Row 1 - Blank, Row 2B - Date, Row 2D:H - Outing Name, Row 2I -Contact name. From Row 3:298 it is Col A - blank, Col B - Number of players (1 thru 295), Col C - Last Name, Col D - First Name, Col E - IF command, Col F - Tee, Col G - Blank, Col H - Course being played. All Column widths are different (none merged). Lastly, row B299:I302 is a merged cell for notes.

Hope this is enough info. I'm stymied.

Can you sort left to right?
To sort left-to-right, use the Sort dialog box. Click Options. Choose "Sort left to right"
Hi:
I don't know specifically about filtering on a hidden column - haven't tried that myself - but you CAN set column width very narrow (I think this is under Format | Columns | Column width... though I use a button usually). If you set the column width to .07 it is nearly invisible but you can still arrow into the cell etc.

I would think the merged cells at the bottom are going to be a problem in many ways. Best to unmerge them. Try using CenterAcrossSelection for horizontal cell alignment under Format |Cells if you can.

For the blank rows displaying, you can also autofilter and display nonblanks.

Regards.
