Sorting by Date

I have a spreadsheet that has a column of dates formatted as 8/22/1977. I want to sort by the month so I tried using the =Left formula but it looks at the cell with the date as being text and returns a "2" as the 1st character. I have the column formatted as a date, but how do I get it to recognize the left number as what it really is instead of how it would format if it were text ?

Excel Facts

Shade all formula cells
To shade all formula cells: Home, Find & Select, Formulas to select all formulas. Then apply a light fill color.
In a spare column enter the formula

=MONTH(A1)

(assuming your dates are in column A) and copy the formula down. Then sort by the new 'month' column.
