Source of Excel Crash?

I am running Excel 2016 and Office Professional Plus 2016. My Excel repeatedly (at least once a day) crashes in a very specific way (see details below). Can anyone offer suggestions on what might cause this type of crash? Or on how to research/troubleshoot this to identify the source of the problem? Thanks in advance.

Here's what happens when Excel crashes:
1) It is not specific to any particular workbook (or workbooks) being open - it seems to happen regardless of what I'm working on
2) Generally no other programs running except Outlook, Windows Explorer and (sometimes) a browser
3) The crash begins with Excel seeming to just suddenly "freeze" in mid-keystroke. Everything just becomes completely non-responsive and hangs there for ~ 1 min.
4) Excel then closes and tries to "reboot" itself and reopen the last saved version of all workbooks that had been open.
5) The files that reopen include that notation "Last Saved by User"

Thank you.
