Hi all

easy question for once, has any one used sparklines:

http://www.vertex42.com/ExcelArticles/sparklines.html

i make a lot of dashboards i like the way it displays information within a cell, has anyone had any experience of using this, or even better if anyone knows how to create miniturized bar and pie charts within a cell, i can do small bar charts by using =rept("I",cell ref) to display lines and the concatenate cells and change rotation to display small bar chart but is very long winded

thanks
Tim

Excel Facts

Copy formula down without changing references
If you have =SUM(F2:F49) in F50; type Alt+' in F51 to copy =SUM(F2:F49) to F51, leaving the formula in edit mode. Change SUM to COUNT.
Try this add-in. It does:
  • Line chart
  • Bar chart
  • Pie chart
  • Variance chart
  • Bullet chart
  • Cascade chart
  • Pareto chart
  • Stacked chart
And all within cells. Pretty handy.

Hi

Have you tried setting up the chart in a normal size (so it's easier to edit) in a worksheet, then use the Excel camera tool to create a dynamic picture of it somewhere else in you model, then resize the picture?

I saw this technique after stumbling upon sparklines and am now putting it into practice.

Just modify your chart to appear how you'd like your sparkline chart to appear (keep it as simple looking as possible), then take a picture & paste it to your model & shrink it down.

I find being able to manipulate the full size original a lot easier than playing with a minature. The updates to your full size chart then automatically flow to the picture.

Cheers.
