The true/false aspect of the vlookup is giving me some problems. I'd like the lookup to return values based off the first 4 characters in the cell while still returning the entirety of the characters in the cell of the column that I'm referencing. So, in the example below, in my spreadsheet (an upload from a payroll provider) I only have 1295. I'd like the vlookup to return the entire account number 1295-UNBILLED RECEIVABLES.

any help would be appreciated.

Excel Facts

Enter current date or time
Ctrl+: enters current time. Ctrl+; enters current date. Use Ctrl+: Ctrl+; Enter for current date & time.
You said you only had the 1st four characters.

Just use the left function to extract the 1st 4 characters from the lookup value.

I may be explaining it backwards.
the image on the left is what comes from my spreadsheet. I need it to format a new column that returns the items on the right.

Did you try what I suggested in post#12?

yes it works perfect- i was hoping to do it without that step, but it is what it is.

Thank you so much for your patience and helpfulness.

What do you mean by "without that step"?

Did you use the left function in the vlookup or in a separate cell?

You can do it without the helper column like
Excel Formula:
=VLOOKUP(LEFT(A2,4)&"*",'[DV COA 12.1.20.xlsx]Sheet1'!$C:$C,1)
