I don't see a non-excel part on the forum, so I post my question here...

A colleague has a very strange problem : the PC spontaneously restarts after shutdown.
The only way to really shutdown the computer (except the use of o_O ) is to hold the power button 5 seconds.
OS = Windows XP Pro
Any idea's ?

Excel Facts

Easy bullets in Excel
If you have a numeric keypad, press Alt+7 on numeric keypad to type a bullet in Excel.
The lobby works:)

Your friends problem might be in the BIOS check through to see if it has a setting for soft power off restarts computer. Be thorough sometimes it's really buried.

I had a faulty power supply once that produced the same problem, re-starts after shutdown.

Replaced the power supply and all was fine then

Hi Oorang
"a setting for soft power off restarts computer" = not seen in the BIOS settings
There is however :
"Soft off by PWRBTN" set to : Instant-off
"AC resume function" set to : Always off
System Temp = 38 °C
CPU Temp = 41 °C

I think that the PC likes overtime...

I've seen similar problems where the 'Wake On LAN' or the 'Wake on Ring' has been turned on in the BIOS. If these are on, set them to off.

checked, was disabled

I now hear that there are also some problems with USB ports, IMHO there remain one possible reason : a faulty motherboard

This is a long shot but its worth a look.

control panel > system > advanced > startup & recovery (settings)

Is there a tick in the box for 'automatically restart' ?

If there is a tick in the box, remove it and see if that helps.
