spreadsheet defaults to text format

I am currently working on a spreadsheet that has quite a few links to other spreadsheets and I am incurring a particularly annoying trait within it.

Whenever I try to enter new formula or modify existing ones, the cell format defaults to text format and displays the formulae entered. I have then tried to reformat the cells to number or general and cannot make the necessary change.

However, if I use search & replace in a cell then the cell format will stay as "general" and display the appropriate calculated values.

Please help, it's very frustrating!!!!!

Lock one reference in a formula
Need 1 part of a formula to always point to the same range? use $ signs: $V$2:$Z$99 will always point to V2:Z99, even after copying
Hi,

It might be related to the Styles menu section, and your default setting for your "normal" style ... or whatever default style has been selected ...

If it is the case, just point to the default style box, right click and change settings according to your needs ...

I have looked into this and it doesn't appear to be the problem, it seems quite quirky and unpredictable as certain columns are unaffected!
