I have this code so far which work’s fine if I enter the trigger word GO manually

MACRO1
End If
End Sub

But now I need to add an if statement =IF((B1<B2),"GO","STOP") into cell A1

but it will not activate the macro.

does anyone know what I am doing wrong

I think the board has truncated your IF statement =IF ((B1

Try posting the IF statement (only) ensuring that any < and > signs have spaces before and after.

I'm guessing that you are using

Code: 
Private Sub Worksheet_Change(ByVal Target As Range)

But that won't be triggered by the result of a formula. Instead try

Code: 
Private Sub Worksheet_Calculate()
If Range("A1").Value = "GO" Then
    Call MACRO1
End If
End Sub

You may need to make sure that MACRO1 changes the value of A1 to avoid MACRO1 being called over and over.
