I'm a novice using Excel 2007, windowsXP, and am trying to find the right formula for the following problem.
I have a column of 3 digit numbers, and want to determine how many times a number occurs in the first position ie: 123 the second position ie: 123 and the third position ie: 123 in the entire column of figures?

Can someone help please?

Thanks in advance.

Thank You Mike, it works like a charm. As I stated in the original query, I am a novice at these things and really appreciate all your responses.

Excel Facts

Convert text numbers to real numbers
Select a column containing text numbers. Press Alt+D E F to quickly convert text to numbers. Faster than "Convert to Number"
I'm glad to have helped.
All three suggestions highlighted the use of absolute/relative addressing.

If you understand why (in all the formulas)

$A$2:$A$12 needs to be absolute row absolute column,
E$1 needs to be absolute row relative column and
$C3 needs to be relative row absolute column

then I wouldn't call you a novice.

I am hoping that someone would be so kind as to help me do this "Statistical Analysis" for 6 ball lottery and also do it for 5 ball?

Thank you,

In that case you should start a new thread and provide more details about exactly what help you need.

I would also suggest that if somebody suggests anything you should respond to that in some way. I make that comments because I notice in the other two threads you have started you have not responded, even though the responses you got may not have been that helpful to you.
