# Strange character in a formula

In a formula i've been workign on, a colleague has come up with the following:
\$K62*((1+(SUM('Tables'!\$D\$29:\$E\$29)/365))^(S\$4-R\$4))-\$K62
I'm usually fairly okay on formulas, but i've no idea what the ^ symbol relates to or means. Can anyone advise??

### Excel Facts

Did you know Excel offers Filter by Selection?
Add the AutoFilter icon to the Quick Access Toolbar. Select a cell containing Apple, click AutoFilter, and you will get all rows with Apple

It is the power notation.

e.g.
2^2 = 4
3^2 = 9

etc.

That is the exponent(I hope I remember my grade 9 math) operator

3^3=3 to the power of 3= 27

3 x 3 x 3

3^4= 3 to the power of 4 = 81

3 x 3 x 3 x 3

Hope this helps.

PS- This operator shows up in the MSExcel help for Excel 97, but it takes you to help screen that doesn't tell you what it does!!!! Gotta love it.

The ^ character is for rasing numbers to powers so 3^2 would be 3 suqared or 9 and 2^3 would be 2 cubed or 8. You can use 9^.5 to take the square root of 9 and 8^(1/3) would give you the cube root of 8.

Many thanks for the prompt responses. I was in teh middle of training, and was hoping the Trainee wouldnt ask what the symbol was!! Wishful thinking, but you guys came to my rescue in less than 8 minutes, (which also meant i won a side bet with my trainee on the powers of the internet!)
