We are using Excel to store and sort text information for a catalog. With one computer used for data entry we get a strange "single quotation mark" that shows up at the beginning of each new entry. It is also happening in the middle of an entry if we are entering new data from the middle.

Does anyone know why this mark is appearing and how to get rid of it?

Excel Facts

What is the fastest way to copy a formula?
If A2:A50000 contain data. Enter a formula in B2. Select B2. Double-click the Fill Handle and Excel will shoot the formula down to B50000.
numbers as text

Excel is looking at numbers and is regarding them as text...ie `5551212. if you want to get hid of it try =right(a1,7)+0.

Hi and welcome to MrExcel

The following formula will remove all single quotes from a text string :

=SUBSTITUTE(A1,"'","")

You may be able to get rid of said quotes simply by copying and pasting values back into the cells. Works on my computer anyhow :)

Thank you for the responses.

I can get rid of them, but the problem is that they keep reappearing. I can have a clean sheet with no quotes and as soon as I type in a cell, a mark shows up again.

Why would it do that?
