Stupid Date Format not Recognized

This is silly. I found this post which jerry-rigs a solution but doesn't solve the problem...

If I have a column of dates in DD/MM/YYYY format (I.e. 23/06/2006), how do I get get Excel to recognize it as a date and format it accordingly, as opposed to me having to 'flip' the days and months first?

There's got to be a way...

Select the cells containing dates, choose Data|Text to Columns and at step 3 specify DMY as the date format.

By the way, for us in the UK MDY is stupid.

Funny. I work for a British Engineering Firm. That would explain why they like DD/MM/YY...
