Stupid Question - Cell displays formula

Why is this happening?
I have a date in cell A1 Say 5/08/2006
I want cell A2 to display next day. 5/09/2006
I type in cell A2 =A1+1
A2 displays =A1+1 instead of 5/09/2006
What the heck?
I can't seem to get around it.
Help is much appreciated.

negative. It doesn't appear to be a formatting issue. I thought it didn't matter the formatting if you have an "=" in front the format applies to the result. I'm not getting the result, I am getting the actual formula which is just plain stupid.

Just throwing in a possiblity - even if you change a cell that is formatted as text to 'general' for example, if there is any entry in the cell it won't be changed until the info is re-entered. Try: selecting the cell, hitting <F2>, then hitting enter (after changing the cell format to general).

Select the formula-showing cells.
Run Edit|Replace.
Set Find What to: =
Set Replace With to: =
Click on the Replace All button.
