I copied data from another application into Excel. A lot of sentences where bulleted with a "-", so Excel made them a formula by prefixing with a "=" sign which gives the #NAME? error.

I first tried formatting all the cells to TEXT, that works as long as I go into each cell and hit enter, except is leaves the "=" sign in the cell. The problem with this that if I hit F9 it does appear to change all the cells to TEXT, I have to click in each and every cell and then hit enter.

I then tried using REPLACE and SUSTITUTE in an ajacent cell to take out the "=" sign, but I keep getting the #NAME? error--it's like it isn't taking out the "=" sign???

Excel Facts

Why does 9 mean SUM in SUBTOTAL?
It is because Sum is the 9th alphabetically in Average, Count, CountA, Max, Min, Product, StDev.S, StDev.P, Sum, VAR.S, VAR.P.

1) highlight the column in question. goto edit->replace. in the dialog box:
find what = "="
replace with = ""

(exclude the quotation marks).

This will remove all of the troublesome equals signs.
