Can someone help me understand how this array formula works?

SUBTOTAL(9,OFFSET($A1:$A5,,1,1,ROW($A$1:$A$5)-1))

I have been using this to return the array for cumulative sum, but i'm not sure how Excel evaluates this > I only know it will give me the results I want.

Meaning if I put this formula in one cell, it will return the numbers in Column 2 in a single cell.
