I export on-line survey results to an Excel spreadsheet. I need a subtotal of items in each column. Results are labels (Ex: E-Mail, Phone, etc), not numbers. I have many columns and do not wish to use the "COUNTIF function because I will need to identify a COUNTIF formula for each unique instance. There must be an easier way to subtotal columns for each unique label in the column automatically. I am using Excel 2003.

How to show all formulas in Excel?
Press Ctrl+` to show all formulas. Press it again to toggle back to numbers. The grave accent is often under the tilde on US keyboards.
Why not use Data>Subtotals...?

Question Using Data Subtotals

I am working with data subtotals and have not figured it out yet. I have 7 columns of data (each contains labels) side by side across the page. Each columns requires a subtotal of unique labels or words in it. Can I select all 7 columns at once and produce subtotals below each for each unique labels in a column?

Can you post some sample data?

It's not 100% clear how it is structured.
