Sum Formula To Count names

I have names in cell a1:a10. If the cell is blank I want it to ignore if there is characters then count as 1. eg

A1= John
A2=
A3=Peter

The sum would be 2.

Any ideas on formula

Try:

=COUNTA(A1:A3)

=COUNTA(A1:A10)

you could just drop a formula in the next column =if(A1="","",1) then sum the 1's mate..
