I would like a formula that sums the Value column based only on unique strings in the Criteria column.
For example, in the above sample, the output should be 70 (10+20+40). I.e. it should count the first A value but ignore the second A value.
I can't remove duplicates from the sheet, therefore looking for a formula-based answer.

Thanks

Is there a shortcut key for strikethrough?
Ctrl+S is used for Save. Ctrl+5 is used for Strikethrough. Why Ctrl+5? When you use hashmarks to count |||| is 4, strike through to mean 5.
Will the value always be the same for each criteria as shown for A?

Yes, so if there is a duplicate for A (in the example) the value would always be 10.

Ok, how about
Excel Formula:
=SUM(UNIQUE(A2:B5))
