Sumif problem

I created a sumifs formula with 4 criteria. I want the formulas to include either ">=cell reference" or "<=cell reference". The problem is that the result comes back incorrect. However, if I just refer to a cell, and in that cell indicate ">=X", then it works. Is there a limitation in the sumifs formula that does not allow for the use of >= as a criteria, or am I just using incorrect syntax?
Thanks!

Excel Facts

Format cells as date
Select range and press Ctrl+Shift+3 to format cells as date. (Shift 3 is the # sign which sort of looks like a small calendar).
You should be able to do what you want but to offer specific advice it would be good to see some small sample data, the formula that you have tried and the actual expected result(s) with XL2BB so we can assess what might be going wrong.
