Bring active cell back into view
Start at A1 and select to A9999 while writing a formula, you can't see A1 anymore. Press Ctrl+Backspace to bring active cell into view.
How about soemthing like this:

Sub Macro1()
Dim cell As Range
counter = 0
For Each cell In Selection
If cell.Interior.Color = vbRed Then counter = counter + cell.Value
Next cell
MsgBox ("The total is " & counter)
End Sub
