I have a data layout like below
File Amounts per Fee Earner.xls
ABCD
1TotalTransactionTypeHeldFiles
2AdamFreeman(S&PFE-BRD)3Sale0
3AdamFreeman(S&PFE-BRD)7Purchase0
Sheet1

What i would like to do is work out the cumulative figure for each person (they can appear more than once) from column B

Can i use SUMIF, or SUMPRODUCT (i have never used sumproduct)

TIA

Try:

=SUMIF(A:A,"Adam Freeman",B:B)

Had an extra bracket in my earlier post.

2 possibilities - you've got an extra space within your list of names (maybe after the surname?), or column B is formatted as text.

Try this
Sumproduct(--(A1:A10="Adam Freeman"),B1:B10)

Because you have additional data after the name

=SUMIF(A:A,"Adam Freeman *",B:B)

If there might be additional data before the name also

=SUMIF(A:A,"* Adam Freeman *",B:B)
