Hi

How do I write the following formula in a way that will be recognised by excel 97-2003?

=SUMIFS(H43:H82,E43:E82,"*Material*")

Excel Facts

Select a hidden cell
Somehide hide payroll data in column G? Press F5. Type G1. Enter. Look in formula bar while you arrow down through G.
SUMIFS and COUNTIFS don't work in earlier versions of Excel. They were new in 2007.
You need to use SUMIF, as sdsurzh suggested.

Try this one...

=SUMPRODUCT(--(ISNUMBER(SEARCH("*MATERIAL*",$E$43:$E$82))),$H$43:$H$82)
