Hello,
I am trying to compile survey information and would like to know how many people took a "Computers" class, and out of those people, how many ranked the class 1,2,3 or 4. Any help is always greatly appreciated!

Excel Facts

Ambidextrous Undo
Undo last command with Ctrl+Z or Alt+Backspace. If you use the Undo icon in the QAT, open the drop-down arrow to undo up to 100 steps.
try this:

=SUMPRODUCT(($A$2:$A$15=$A17)*($B$2:$B$15=B$16))

where $A$2:$A$15 and $B$2:$B$15 contains the table you displayed,

$A17 is the first cell in a range containing a list of unique class names ("Computers")

B$16:E$16 contain the numbers 1 -4

klaimkilla - you're relatively new here, so I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt. Generally if someone just posed "Doesn't work" as a response to my solution, I wouldn't bother posting again.

It does work. I don't know if you noticed, but btadams posted a very similar solution. If your posted sample (including headers) is in A!:B15, then the formula returns 3, which is the number of rows with Computers where the rank is 1,2,3 or 4. If you need to know eg, just how many took Computers and ranked the class 1, use =SUMPRODUCT(--(A2:A15="Computers"),--(B2:B15=1)).

If there's some other reason why the formula doesn't work, then please post more details.

Also - if you're looking to summarise the whole table, eg subtotal for each class and rank, then a pivot table is probably a better method.
