Summating values

I have a column of data (general format) in Excel 2007, which I inherit. I'm not allowed to change the format of the column.
Some of the rows are blank.
What formula can I use after the last row to summate the data?

You can use a SUM formula. Excel will ignore blanks

=SUM(A1:A6)

Ah, I was using ALT+ to do the calculation which was not working as it didn't start from A1.

Alt + will never work. You have to put it manually.
