Dear All,

If I have a table something like this and I want to plot a surface chart from it, how should I do that?

Performance Parameter1 Parameter2
......444...........14.............39
......777...........17.............35
......444...........14.............35
......888...........14.............38
......222...........13.............33
......555...........15.............33

However, first the table needs to be rearranged to look like this:
...................-------- Parameter2 values --------
.....|......................444.......222.......555
.....|
.....|..................................444
Parameter 1
...values.............................777.......888
.....|
.....|

Is it possible to do this without writing a script in Visual Basic, so only with functions?
As you can see, the same values might occur several time in each columns.
And when you make a linear scale from Parameter1 and Parameter2 to be able to plot the surface chart, there will be several blank cells without any value (they should be considered as zeros or as the minimum value in the corresponding parameter column).

So, how can this be done?

Thank you,
Arpad

Excel Facts

Create a chart in one keystroke
Select the data and press Alt+F1 to insert a default chart. You can change the default chart to any chart type
Dont realy understand what you are trying to do here. What is the transformation supposed to achieve and which values are you trying to plot against each other?

I want to see Performance data on the Z Vertical axis. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" /><o:p></o:p>
The surface chart shows how it changes based upon Parameter1 and Parameter2. In order to achieve this, Parameter1 has to be the row headers and Parameter2 has to be the column headers. Performance should be the table values.<o:p></o:p>
My problem is that I have the data in 3 columns, so there are only columns headers but I don’t have row headers, hence I don’t have table data at the intersection of each Parameter1 and Parameter2 value.<o:p></o:p>
And the other problem is that the values are not in a line: 5, 9, 4, 3 have to be converted in sequence: 3, 4, 5, 9 AND it must be filled with all numbers between the smallest and the largest number: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9.

This is how surface charts work.<o:p></o:p>

You can sort your parameters by using a formula

Data Top left corner is B3

The top left of this table starts in G3

In H3 and copied right is:

=SMALL($C$4:$C$8,(COUNTIFS($C$4:$C$8,"<="&G3)+1))

In G4 and so on are formulae that look like this

=SMALL($B$4:$B$8,1)

In H4 the formula looks like this

=IF(OFFSET($C$4,MATCH($G4,$B$4:$B$8,0)-1,0)=H$3,OFFSET($C$4,MATCH($G4,$B$4:$B$8,0)-1,1),0)

You can extend this approach as far as you like but you will then need to use a dynamic range to pick the data for your surface chart.

Thank you very much!<o:p></o:p>
It is amazing you could solve this!<o:p></o:p>
I’m impressed.<o:p></o:p>
I’ve tried it and it works as it should.<o:p></o:p>

You are welcome - note it only works properly if there are no duplicate Parameter 1 values as it finds only the first row that contains a Parameter 1 value. I cant think of an easy way around that just now.

Yes i can - you need to modify the sorting formula for Parameter 1 so it looks similar to Parameter 2 and then you need to enter an array formula into the body of your table

The one in H4 looks like this:

=SUM(($B$4:$B$8=$G4)*($C$4:$C$8=H$3)*($D$4:$D$8))

but you enter it as an array formula by pressing control-shift-enter together

And copy it - you cant copy it over itself so you have to copy to the rest of that column first and then copy that column to the rest of the columns

That works for all cases I think but if you have exact duplicates (Parameter 1 and Parameter 2 the same) then it adds the values together and I really cant think of an easy way around that unless you remove duplicates first
