anon125 - you're getting confused about how to calculate the TANGENT.
As you say, the tangent is given by the opposite / adjacent.
And for 45 degrees, this is 1/1.
So the tangent IS 1.
You don't need to work out the tangent OF 1.

Yes, you're right, that was covered in previous posts by using Excel's DEGREES function, but your suggestion does the same.if i got it right you need the angle in degrees:
=ATAN(opposite/adjacent)*180/PI()
remember the maths
