Hi all...

Please let me know what statement in vb that i can use to determine if a cell (column 1) has a number or a string. I know how to test for null's "" and specific characters such as "Description:"... The other possible values in a cell in the same column will be a number 1 through x or a variable length string (the actual description).

Many thanks...

Does the VLOOKUP table have to be sorted?
No! when you are using an exact match, the VLOOKUP table can be in any order. Best-selling items at the top is actually the best.
This would test for numeric:

if isnumeric(cellValue)

This would test if it is not numeric:

if not isnumeric(cellValue)

Hope that helps.

And then to check if a certain value is in a cell you would use:

if instr(cellValue,"Description") > 0 then

Hope that helps.

Hi

A remark (maybe not relevant for the test you are making):

IsNumeric() does not tell you if the value is a number, it tells you if the value is something possible to convert to a number.

Ex:

Code:
MsgBox IsNumeric(1)
MsgBox IsNumeric("1")
MsgBox IsNumeric(" - 1 ")
MsgBox IsNumeric(True)

You'll see that all these statements result in True.

If you want to test if the value is a string, test its type:

Code:
MsgBox VarType(Range("A1").Value) = vbString
