Within a range of dates (named "Course_Start"), I would like to determine how many of those have the same month start date as a date defined in cell D3. I thought I could simply use a COUNTIF statement to do this but am getting errors.

=COUNTIF(Course_Start, MONTH(Course_Start)=MONTH(D3))

Excel Facts

Control Word Wrap
Press Alt+Enter to move to a new row in a cell. Lets you control where the words wrap.
I think you need a helper column which calculates the month of each date within the range Course_Start.

=SUM(IF(MONTH(A1:A10)=MONTH(D3),1))

...entered with control + shift + enter. not just enter
