The 'calculate' message on the lower right corner of Excel's status bar

I understand that while in manual calc mode, dirty formulas trigger the
appearance of the 'calculate' message on the status bar. However the
message usually goes away once you hit F9 and does not come back
until the formula gets dirty again for some reason.

When dealing with User Defined Functions, I have noticed that the
calculate message shows up every time, if you had pressed F9, and
along the way in your processing, you have had reason to set the
Range.Formula property with some value.

Is that expected?

(My question pertains ONLY to manual calculation mode.)

Excel Facts

Wildcard in VLOOKUP
Use =VLOOKUP("Apple*" to find apple, Apple, or applesauce
It may be because UDFs are not naturally volatile.
Try adding this line to the top of your UDF and see if it makes a difference.
