as a rookie to excel, i am curious where i should focus my time and effort in learning excel. by that i mean other than getting a good basic understanding of how excel works, what things in excel should i concentrate on learning. should i concentrate on charts, pivot tables, functions, etc.

Thanks.

Excel Facts

Save Often
If you start asking yourself if now is a good time to save your Excel workbook, the answer is Yes
This is just me but i find the hardest part is not recreating the wheel. Many times on a spreadsheet i will hop into VBA and make a function etc for a complex formula that excel could have done by itself if i knew the way it worked better. Learn the basic structures and try to make it work in excel first VBA second imo.

For basic Excel, "Sheet Functions" [Concentrate on topics that you will use! Why study Finance functions when you will never use them?] then "Formatting" [Both Cell and Sheet; Making your application look good, be user friendly and efficent to use.] "VBA" [How to code basic Subs to advance Excel's funtionality.].
