THREED over unequal ranges?

I'm using a THREED function within a VLOOKUP to evaluate over a multiple sheet range, and while the VLOOKUP argument is fine, my THREED argument is flawed.
I was hoping that THREED could be adapted to work with the following format, but it chokes and returns #value on the following formula:

=vlookup(d3,(threed(k:'5'!$b$4:$k$103,'6-8'!$b$4:$k$303,'9-12'!$b$4:$k$403)), 10, false)

So, do I have to add 300 empty rows to k:5! and 100 empty rows to '6-8'! to make all of the worksheet ranges equal for the THREED argument?

Thank you.
