time clock

I'm looking for a formula that will convert in/out times to total hours worked in a day. For example A1=7am, A2=11am, A3=11:30am and A4=4pm.

All of the times represent 1 work day. What formula will calculate those 4 numbers to show total hours worked or 8.5 hours in this case.

Thanks,
Chip

Excel Facts

What do {} around a formula in the formula bar mean?
{Formula} means the formula was entered using Ctrl+Shift+Enter signifying an old-style array formula.
=SUM(A2-A1,A4-A3)*24

Note: Format as General or 0.0

Why the *24, Mark, doesn't that give you a few more than 8.5 hours?

I tried Mark W.'s answer and get 8.5

Excel store time values as fractions of a day. 6:00 AM is 0.25. 0.25*24 is 6.

Thanks so much for the help. It works great.

I'm sure no one cares really, but if any one would like a copy of my 'pay calculator' spreadsheet I'll pass it along. Actually it's more of a budget where all you should have to do is initially enter your bills and payrate then as you enter your hours everything changes to show you how much of your \$\$ goes to bills and what is disposable.

My first attempt at a 'real' spreadsheet.
