I am trying to use a formula where I have about 10 different scenarios for the checking whether a cell in column A contains certain text; based on which I want to type a certain text in the corresponding cell in column B

Is there a simple way rather than using the =IF formula cause currently my IF statement is too long. There was something but it's been a while since I played with Excel and i just can't recall it.

Excel Facts

Return population for a City
If you have a list of cities in A2:A100, use Data, Geography. Then =A2.Population and copy down.
Thanks Andrew.

Had a look at the site and looks like VLOOKUP will do the trick. Will play with it.
