total if a cell is not blank

Hi there,
I have four cells A1, A2, A3 & A4
In cell A4 I want to return the sum of A2 & A3 - but only if A1 is not a blank (open) cell. A1 may contain label text or a number - only then do I want the total of A2+A3 in cell A4.
What is te formula I write in cell A4. ( presumably "=IF(A1...? etc etc - but what?)
any help most appreciated

What is the outcome expected if the cell A1 has "space" in the cell?

you could use this formula if a space resides in A1

=IF(TRIM(A1)="","",A2+A3)
